  • New York, NY

Job Description

FlexTek is partnered with a leading environmental services company to find an experienced Fleet Maintenance Manager in the Brooklyn, NY metro area. This position will oversee daily fleet maintenance operations, lead a team of maintenance professionals, and ensure equipment reliability, safety, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with a strong mechanical background, excellent people management skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated maintenance professional looking to take ownership of a critical operation and continue growing their leadership career.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of maintenance technicians and supervisory personnel, fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee daily shop operations, including preventive maintenance, mechanical repairs, equipment inspections, and fleet readiness to support demanding route schedules.
  • Manage maintenance budgets, purchasing, parts inventory, vendor coordination, and overall shop expenditures to maintain cost-effective operations.
  • Establish maintenance priorities, coordinate technician schedules, and ensure equipment is repaired and returned to service efficiently.
  • Maintain a strong safety culture by identifying and correcting potential hazards, reinforcing OSHA safety practices, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards.
  • Work closely with operations leadership to minimize vehicle downtime, resolve urgent equipment issues, and support uninterrupted daily service.
  • Take a hands-on approach to shop leadership, providing technical guidance, troubleshooting support, and effective communication across the maintenance team.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum of 3 years of maintenance leadership experience, with demonstrated success supervising, coaching, and developing technicians or maintenance personnel.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge of heavy-duty trucks, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and fleet maintenance operations.
  • Proven ability to manage shop operations, prioritize repairs, coordinate preventive maintenance, and maintain equipment availability.
  • Experience with maintenance budgets, parts purchasing, inventory management, and cost control.
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety, OSHA practices, hazard identification, and corrective action.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with a people-first leadership approach.
  • Flexibility to respond to urgent operational and maintenance needs outside standard business hours, including overnight emergencies.

Ideal Background

  • Experience in waste management, environmental services, transportation, or other heavy-duty fleet maintenance environments.
  • Background in construction equipment, concrete or ready-mix operations, or similar industries involving heavy-duty trucks and hydraulic systems.
  • A mechanically skilled professional who has progressed from a technician or diesel mechanic into a maintenance supervisor or management position.
  • A proactive, growth-oriented leader who enjoys mentoring employees, improving processes, and building high-performing maintenance teams.

Work Environment

  • Schedule: Early morning start, typically between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, with flexibility to remain onsite as operational needs require.
  • Availability: This is an operations-driven leadership position rather than a traditional eight-hour workday. The manager must be prepared to respond to urgent maintenance situations, including after-hours and overnight calls.
  • Setting: Primarily shop-based, with regular interaction with technicians, supervisors, and operations leadership.
  • Relocation: Candidates open to relocating to the Brooklyn, NY area will be considered.
